Daisy Duck heard her ducklings pipping at their shells. They are using their egg tooth to break open the shell air sac where they have been growing for thirty-three days.
Daisy is excited, “My ducklings are hatching and I am going to teach them how to catch food and how to swim.” It will be a few more days before the ducklings crack open their shells but Daisy is patient.
“Cheep! Cheep! Cheep!” On day three out pops ducking number one.
“I shall name you Pip because you pipped a hole in your shell first,” Daisy told the tiny yellow duckling.
Pip tried to say quack but it sounded more like “Qak.” Pip’s voice was very new.
“Cheep! Cheep! Cheep!” Right after Pip out popped ducking number two.
“I shall name you Inky,” Daisy says to the tiny all black ducking. Inky blinks.
Daisy looks at egg number three. The egg wobbles. But it does not crack open. Daisy nudges the egg. Still it does not pop open.
Daisy helps Pip and Inky snuggle under her belly feathers to get warm and dry.
Daisy looks at egg number three. Suddenly it cracks wide open. “There you are,” says Daisy. “I shall call you Pokey because you took so long to hatch.”
Daisy tucks Pokey under her belly with Pip and Inky. “Sleep now my ducklings. Later I will teach you many wonderful things.”
Daisy is happy. When the ducklings are dry and rested Daisy will teach Pip and Inky and Pokey how to find yummy bugs. And then she will teach them how to swim in the pond.
But now Daisy is tired too. She will take a nap with her duckings safely tucked under her belly.
